I'm totally disgusted - we live in a fallen world

Before I read this article I was going to write about how, once in awhile we see glimpses of the grace that our world should have - some good news for a change.

But then I read this:

WAYCROSS, Ga. - A group of third-graders plotted to attack their teacher, bringing a broken steak knife, handcuffs, duct tape and other items for the job and assigning children tasks including covering the windows and cleaning up afterward, police said Tuesday.

The plot by as many as nine boys and girls at Center Elementary School in south Georgia was a serious threat, Waycross Police Chief Tony Tanner said.

"We did not hear anybody say they intended to kill her, but could they have accidentally killed her? Absolutely," Tanner said. "We feel like if they weren't interrupted, there would have been an attempt. Would they have been successful? We don't know."

The children, ages 8 and 9, were apparently mad at the teacher because she had scolded one of them for standing on a chair, Tanner said. A prosecutor said they are too young to be charged with a crime under Georgia law.

School officials alerted police Friday after a pupil tipped off a teacher that a girl had brought a weapon to school, Tanner said.

Police seized a broken steak knife, handcuffs, duct tape, electrical and transparent tape, ribbons and a crystal paperweight from the students, who apparently intended to use them against the teacher, Tanner said.

Nine children have been given discipline up to and including long-term suspension, said Theresa Martin, spokeswoman for the Ware County school system. She would not be more specific but said none of the children had been back to school since the case came to light.

The purported target is a veteran educator who teaches third-grade students with learning disabilities including attention deficit disorder, delayed development and hyperactivity, friends and parents said.

The scheme involved a division of roles, Tanner said. One child's job was to cover windows so no one could see outside, he said. Another was supposed to clean up after the attack.

"We're not sure at this point in the investigation how many of the students actually knew the intent was to hurt the teacher," Tanner said.

The parents of the students have cooperated with investigators, who aren't allowed to question the children without their parents' or guardians' consent, he said. Authorities have withheld the children's names.

Police expected to forward the results of their investigation to prosecutors, Tanner said.

Children in Georgia can't be charged with a crime unless they are at least 13, District Attorney Rick Currie said.

Martin told The Florida Times-Union of Jacksonville, Fla., that administrators would follow school system policy and state law in disciplining the students.

"From what I understand, they were considered pretty good kids," Martin said. "But we have to take this seriously, whether they were serious or not about carrying this through, and that's what we did."

Four mothers of other third-grade students at Center Elementary called for the immediate expulsion of the suspected plotters.

Stacy Carter and Deana Hiott both cited school system policy stating that any student who brings "anything reasonably considered to be a weapon" is to be expelled for at least the remainder of the school year.

"We don't want our children around them," Carter told the Times-Union. "The one with the knife could have stabbed my child or someone else's child at lunch or out on the playground."

"This is an isolated incident, an aberration. ... We have good kids," Center Principal Angie Coleman told the newspaper.

Why I like the Celebrity Apprentice

I really enjoyed the Celebrity Apprentice - it was fun to watch and I learned alot about human behaviour from this series. Unfortunately "my" contestant - Trace Adkins - didn't win. At least not in the way he had hoped for I am sure.

He lost to a guy who was - well, OK. He won a lot of money for his charity and I suppose I should be glad for him but I'm not - good job Piers

At one point I really wanted him to win because he was being harrassed by Omarosa - quite frankly I was disgusted by her behaviour.

In any case, I had never, ever heard of Trace Adkins - I don't know about the rest of America. But I have to say - to a man, everybody LOVED Trace. He's quiet, down to earth and when he speaks he actually has something worth listening to. He was smart too - he just wasn't as cut-throat and ruthless as Piers - nor did he have as many rich friends.

But now, I am sure Trace is counting all the blessings God has given him (yes - Trace is Christian - I loved the part where they showed him praying with his family). I am going to buy all his records - I like his songs - I started listening to them and I am sure many others who didn't know him, will as well.

God is so great in this way. He's doing the same things in my life - asking us to wait on His time for His blessings - not in the linear way to see things the way we want to.

Life is sweet

Easter Monday - so funny...my daughter was off from school (she's 8 years old now btw). She wanted to see me deliver a lecture to my University students. I thought about it and agreed that she could sit in on a lecture on the digestive tract. I'd like to think that God graced me with a good voice, good people skills and a passion for teaching.

She sat waaaay at the back of the lecture hall - designed for 300 students. Most of them actually showed up! It's a 2-hour lecture by the way. Before we left, I told her jokingly to take notes. Anyways, I can tell you it's distracting to keep NOT looking at your daughter in class. I thought I did a good job with the lecture and engaged the students as much as possible. Hey, they even gave me a sitting ovation at the end so I figured I did alright.

My daughter comes walking down from the back of the class - she said I did well, and gave me a grade of A-. She also commented that I should practice before I give a lecture as I said uhm, uh etc. too often. I also looked over her notes - I have to say she took a full page of notes and did a great job. It was a blessing from God that I could show her her Dad in action.

Thanks God.

I'm Asleep

I just finished reading Luke Chapters 22 and 23 to my daughter before she fell asleep. I could hardly keep my voice from cracking as I read of how much our Lord and Saviour wanted to eat His Last Supper with His disciples. Then I read about how the Apostles fell asleep while Jesus prayed at the Mount of Olives. I used to think the Apostles were such a bunch of jerks for not being able to stay awake with Jesus but then again I am so much like them: 1) thinking more of myself than I should, 2) not praying when I should be, and 3) denying Jesus (in too many subtle ways). I haven't felt this moved by Good Friday (well, actually Maundy Thursday) in a long time. 2008 has really been a year of alot of reflection, surprises both good and bad - and a new thirst for God (I hope it is a genuine thirst). Yup - very emotional. But luckily I still have Luke 24 to read with my daughter. And that's what makes this a happy joyous beginning. God bless!

Stuff

Yes - I haven't updated in a very long time - the summer really flew by. Lots of really amazing things happening in my life that I am very thankful to God for. In any case I just wanted to put this on my blog so that I will be able to come back and look at this later on - because even after a day it seems more like coincidence than the finger of God.

Yesterday I was going home on the subway and reading the Bible; and the subway got "stuck" at a subway station and I heard the announcer say there was a delay on the line. At about the same time I also think I heard God say to get off of the subway. I did - right away - it was weird. But I kept asking why and what did He want from me. I went upstairs to the buses and I saw my old student from the Inner City Missions last year, Eric. To the best of my recollection I think I knew right away that this is why I was sent here. I asked what he was doing so far from home and he said he was going to the hospital. Apparently his father had had a heart attack on Saturday. Eric and his sisters are Christian, but his parents are not. So I asked if he had prayed for his father and he shared that yes, they had all prayed, including his mother. And he thinks maybe because of this terrible tragedy that both his parents may become Christian. I think God sent me to this place to uplift my faith, to make sure I obeyed, and to pray for Eric and his family. I was really shaken after this.
But it doesn't end here - later yesterday I had a dream about Jesus - this is the first time ever. I have never had a "religious" dream before in my entire life (as far as I can remember). He was performing the miracle of feeding the 5000 and I was right there and he explained as he was multiplying the bread, that He was the bread of life and that He too was being multiplied in His disciples and that was what the story also was about. He told me (I think because now, at 3:37 PM EDT it's hard to be sure) that I should also help Him multiply the bread to feed others. It was weird, and for some reason I wanted to share this with other people. I can barely remember the dream now but at the time it was very vivid and I think (hope) it was from the Spirit.
Well - I hope to continue updating a bit more frequently. God Bless everyone - and for you Yanks - have a great Thanksgiving (we had ours a month ago)......try not to spend too much on Black Friday.
